Scott Myers

Typically when I read an article or book where they discuss movie themes, the focus is on the one, big, overarching story theme.

People tend to frame the subject as if there is one story theme and it is equivalent to the “moral of the story”.

While I agree that most movies will have one central, unifying theme, that is not the end of it. In my view, a story should have multiple themes: some big, some small, some specific to one subplot, others in play across several subplots, some readily apparent, other tiny grace notes that exist only for the most discerning eye.

Why multiple themes? Because good stories are multilayered. They have plots and subplots, primary characters and secondary characters, themes and sub-themes. The value of sub-themes is that they not only can amplify the central theme by giving it various angles of meaning, they also provide the script reader a variety of emotional and psychological access points into the story.

Let’s look at a few notable movies and consider the central themes and sub-themes.

With , the title itself and what it refers to tips us off to a central theme: the power that death has over the living as evidenced by the recurring nightmares suffered by the story’s Protagonist Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster). There is also the sub-theme of transformation focused around Buffalo Bill, the moths, and the killer’s desire to become a woman by accumulating and sewing together a female skin-suit. That sub-theme is also played out in Clarice’s own metamorphosis. There is the sub-theme of blood and blood sacrifice, directly tied to the absolution of Clarice’s guilt. There is also an interesting sub-theme with Clarice and father figures — the loss of her own father, the role her FBI boss (Crawford) plays, and even Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) as substitute patriarchal figures.

How about the comedy ? We all know the central theme in that movie, as the Protagonist Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman), confesses to the Attractor character Julie Nichols (Jessica Lange), “But I was a better man with you, as a woman, than I ever was with a woman, as a man.” There also is a sub-theme of the roles we play and the masks we wear in our public lives. A sub-theme about friendship. A sub-theme about honesty. Another sub-theme about the contemporary’s culture’s cult of personality.

Finally, what about ? “Get busy living, or get busy dying” is the clearest articulation of its central theme. Amplifying that point is Red’s personal transformation — from cynicism (“dying”) to hope (“living”). But there are sub-themes involving hypocrisy in the form of Norton’s religiosity versus his illicit extortion activities. There is the sub-theme of institutionalization. Sub-themes of violence, self-deception to self-honesty, sublime beauty amidst the darkest corners of human existence (e.g., suds on the roof, Mozart over the PA system, Rita / Raquel posters on the wall). How about “salvation lies within”?

If you look at these three movies, their central themes and sub-themes, I think you’ll see that the smaller themes tie into and enhance the depth of meaning of the main themes.

I contend you can analyze any movie, or at least those that are any good, and find multiple themes in each. Turning that point around, therefore, it is incumbent upon us, as writers, to be aware of the themes that emerge as we develop and write our stories.

That said, themes are oftentimes the most elusive aspects of the story-crafting process. I remember reading once that James L. Brooks was in the editing room working on when he finally realized what the central theme of that story was. After co-writing the script. Casting. Rehearsals. Production. All that. And only during editing that he fully grasped the essence of the story from a thematic standpoint.

As I said, themes can be elusive.

So let me open this up for discussion: How do you find and develop your story’s themes? Is it a straight-ahead process or one that plays out in fits and starts? Do you think in terms of central themes and sub-themes? Finally what’s the best advice you’ve ever read or received about working with story themes? Comment Archive

Tenants were generally treated according to due process of law, being served with notices of eviction and given time (typically three months) to vacate. However, many were reluctant to leave, did not obey the eviction notices, and were evicted with force. The methods used were sometimes harsh, even by the standards of the early 19th century. [26] Donald McLeod, a Sutherland stonemason, [35] wrote about the events he witnessed:

The consternation and confusion were extreme. Little or no time was given for the removal of persons or property; the people striving to remove the sick and the helpless before the fire should reach them; next, struggling to save the most valuable of their effects. The cries of the women and children, the roaring of the affrighted cattle, hunted at the same time by the yelling dogs of the shepherds amid the smoke and fire, altogether presented a scene that completely baffles description — it required to be seen to be believed.

A dense cloud of smoke enveloped the whole country by day, and even extended far out to sea. At night an awfully grand but terrific scene presented itself — all the houses in an extensive district in flames at once. I myself ascended a height about eleven o'clock in the evening, and counted two hundred and fifty blazing houses, many of the owners of which I personally knew, but whose present condition — whether in or out of the flames — I could not tell. The conflagration lasted six days, till the whole of the dwellings were reduced to ashes or smoking ruins. During one of these days a boat actually lost her way in the dense smoke as she approached the shore, but at night was enabled to reach a landing-place by the lurid light of the flames. [36]

in 1812. MacDonnell claimed to support Highland culture, while simultaneously clearing his tenants.

Accounts like those of McLeod and General David Stewart of Garth brought widespread condemnation. Two old people evicted at Sellar's orders were too ill to go far. He left them exposed to the chill northern air and they died. He was acquitted on a charge of manslaughter, but the Duchess wrote: "The more I hear and see of Sellar the more I am convinced that he is not to be trusted more than he is at present. He is so exceedingly greedy and harsh with the people, there are very heavy complaints against him from Strathnaver." In due course Sellar was dismissed from his post. [31]

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your body doesn’t make or use the properly. It causes too much (sugar) to build up in the blood. There are 2 main types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when your body doesn’t produce any insulin. It is sometimes called juvenile diabetes because it is usually discovered in children and teenagers, but it may appear in adults, too. Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body doesn’t produce enough insulin or doesn’t use the insulin as it should. In the past, doctors thought that only adults were at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. However, an increasing number of children in the United States are now being diagnosed with the disease. Doctors think this increase is mostly because more children are overweight or obese and are less physically active.

Prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than they should be, but not high enough to officially be diagnosed as diabetes. Pre-diabetes greatly increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The good news is that, if you have prediabetes, you can prevent or delay the onset of full-blown type 2 diabetes by making lifestyle changes. These include eating a healthy diet, reaching and maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising regularly.

What causes diabetes?

In type 1 diabetes, your body doesn’t make insulin. This is because the system attacks and destroys the cells in the that make the insulin. Doctors aren’t sure why this happens.

When you eat, your body changes most of the food you digest into glucose (a form of sugar). A hormone called insulin allows this glucose to enter all the cells of your body. There it is used for energy. Insulin is produced by the pancreas. In someone who has type 2 diabetes, the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or the body’s cells can’t use insulin properly (called insulin resistance). This causes glucose to build up in your blood instead of moving into the cells. Too much glucose in the blood can lead to serious health problems that damage the blood vessels, nerves, heart, eyes, and kidneys.

Certain risk factors for type 2 diabetes include:

The risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases with the number of risk factors you have. If you have 2 or more risk factors, talk to your doctor about how to delay or prevent type 2 diabetes.
